Wisdom classification ● Smart life - sustainable product service system design for waste sorting and rational use of resources

School of Design,2018 undergraduate"Complex System Design"and postgraduate student"Design Evolution and Sustainability"course operation joint exhibition.

Instructor: Associate Professor Zhang Jun

Course students: 2015 industrial design undergraduate, 2017 postgraduate student

Victor Papanac, a 20th-century design thinker, once said that "the balance between ecology and the environment is the foundation for all human beings on Earth. Without it, life and human culture cannot be discussed. Design focuses on products, tools, machinery, and labor. The development of products and other facilities has a profound and direct impact on the ecology."

China is in the period of social development and economic transformation. On the one hand, it faces increasingly severe resource and environmental challenges, and is also striving to achieve the medium and long-term goals of developing a green economy and ecological civilization. The quality of the entire ecological environment and the sustainable development of society is closely related to the life and behavior of each consumer.Garbage siege, take-out of disposable packaging, the conscious or unintentional disposal of items or the lack of reasonable recycling, and many other common practices are extremely harmful to the environment and ecology. All sectors of society and various disciplines are actively seeking and exploring effective solutions. In the spring of 2018, the "Complex System Design" course and the "Design Evolution and Sustainable Design" postgraduate course, rethinking and designing sustainable lifestyles, rethinking current waste classification around the topic of waste sorting and resource reuse. Recycling system as a drawback of public systems and service systems and trying to redesign. The 2015 undergraduate students and the 2017 postgraduate students face this design problem involving many complicated social factors. They hope to integrate the hardware and software by using the power of their own design disciplines and using the design method of the product service system as the core. The system solution can better realize waste reduction and resource utilization, and improve the quality of life and living environment. This exhibition is the result of the wisdom and creativity of all undergraduate and postgraduate students. It also demonstrates their systematic thinking and in-depth analysis process, as well as many exciting creative design solutions.

The course started with field research and study. The students visited Wanrong Technology, the largest resource recycling enterprise in Hunan Province. They visited the “City Minerals” exhibition hall and learned about Wanrong’s garbage sorting and recycling model, and the largest kitchen waste processing center in Changsha - the Joint Kitchen. Some of the students also conducted in-depth research on the sanitation department, shopping malls, markets and communities, understanding the reality and the needs of enterprises and citizens, and even designing their own garbage delivery experiments to obtain first-hand data for their research and creativity.

The students are concerned about a wide range of issues. The research and design  is focus on community waste classification, special scene waste disposal (scenic areas, hospitals, high-speed rail, supermarkets, etc.) and second-hand items (including clothing, medicines, etc.),especially an alternative to take-away and express packaging,as well as the shared bicycle abandonment and bicycle cemetery phenomenon that is widely concerned in the current society. On the basis of real-life cognition, reflection and data visualization for these problems, a new concept design solution is proposed at the system innovation level, and a complete product service system is designed in combination with business model innovation. The solution with product output as the core includes not only inductive garbage collection tools that embody smart technology, surface garbage unmanned recycling vessels, but also sanitation workers protection kits that reflect human care, maze and map game suits for children's environmental education. Etc., as well as the use of design ideas for the disassembly and upgrade of shared bicycle parts, the design of hidden parking piles for bicycles and so on;In the aspect of garbage separation and recycling, many groups of students boldly put forward different attempts, such as four-color classification system, large-scale activities for scenic spots, pedestrian streets, music festivals, and even special recycling system concepts for special occasions such as Everest garbage;Innovative models based on business models are proposed on second-hand clothing and expired drugs; In terms of solving take-away and express packaging, there are new business model systems that cooperate with logistics companies and sanitation and disinfection industries,as well as various alternative concepts such as updating alternative packaging materials and variable volume of logistics turnover packaging. Such as the campus, office paper products recycling, cosmetics container recycling and other innovative recycling system. The students' solutions integrate the contents of industrial design, interaction design and service design for hardware software and full-process experience, and initially have comprehensive design capabilities to solve complex social problems using product service system design.

From June 19th to June 21st, the joint exhibition of undergraduate and postgraduate students' works was held in the peach lake exhibition hall of the Design Institute. The students used various forms such as exhibition boards, models and interactive prototypes to display the design concept.Dean He Renke attend the opening ceremony of the exhibition and exchange works with the students. He agrees with the spirit of inquiry for the students to deepen social issues, and encourages the students to continue their efforts to strive for better design works and representative achievements.
