PAN Chao, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor and Master’s Supervisor at the School of Design, Hunan University. He holds a Ph.D. in Art Studies and completed postdoctoral fellowship in History. His main research fields include art history, museology, visual culture, and the history and theory of design.
He was a “Shuimu Scholar” Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Tsinghua University from 2023 to 2025. He received his Ph.D. from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, his M.A. in Art Theory from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and his B.A. in Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 2018, he studied as an exchange M.A. student at the University of Bologna, Italy.
He is currently a Research Fellow at the Wu Guanzhong Art Research Center, Tsinghua University, and was a Visiting Scholar in 2025 at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Nanjing University. In 2023, he was selected for Tsinghua University’s “Shuimu Scholar” program for outstanding young researchers.
He has directed several research projects, including a Key Think Tank Project of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, a project funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, and a project supported by the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities. His monograph, The Gift of Jiangshan: Constructing the Visual Image of Northwest China through the Perspective of National Landscape, 1931-1949, was published by Tsinghua University Press in 2024.
He has published more than ten single-authored academic journal articles in CSSCI-and A&HCI-indexed journals, among others, with selected articles reprinted in full by China Social Science Excellence. He has also presented more than ten single-authored papers at major academic forums and conferences, including the National Fine Arts Summit Forum and the Annual Conference of the College Art Association in the United States.
