Course Introduction

The definition of design has dramatically changed recently: both academic and industrial circles have paid increasing attention to the rationality of design; meanwhile, design is not only closely related to industries but also gets involved in social innovation. This is a compulsory course open to bachelor students who have taken fundamental courses about industrial design or visual communication design. Design is essentially about positively affecting people’s ways of life. This course is aimed to cultivate students’ ability to investigate the living of a certain community, profession or social class by anthropological tools, based on which design proposals are made to improve human life. Design proposals could be the design of products, services, visual communication, videos, architectures and landscapes. This course will enable students to lay a solid foundation for future industrial or academic careers related to anthropological investigation. The teaching methods include lecturing, field surveys as well as discussions concerning design research and practice.
