Course Introduction

Intro to Design is the first fundamental required course for the freshman of Industrial Design major. It will be taught in Chinese and English. We will use multimedia content, slides and lecturing to deliver the basic content, and come with discussion and sharing in class. This class emphasis on students’ participation, and presentation. Intro to Design includes 9 chapters in 8 lectures, following with short video in English. Students will have a broad understanding of the basic design theory and concepts from this course. It works with Design History to be the pillars of design historical and theoretical knowledge system. It is a theoretical course with knowledge depth and broadness. Students will learn design from history, society, culture, economics, lifestyle, science and technology, and materials, understand the meaning of design and its trend. There are a lot of discussion and research on design theory and conceptual issues in this class. This class will grade based on every student’s performance, includes: Assignment 1 (20%), 15-min paper 1 (5%), 15-min paper 2 (5%), quiz (5%), term project (60%), attendance (5%), and extra credit to participation and contribution in class.
