Subject introduction
Design is an emerging, comprehensive application discipline that mainly researches the laws, behaviors, and cultural values of design innovation. The discipline obtained the first batch of master's degree granting right in 1993(the title of the discipline was industrial plastic art at that time). In 2005, it obtained the right to grant doctorate degree in design art. In 2011, it obtained the first batch of first-level discipline doctorate degree granting of design discipline. The discipline has an academic echelon with high academic level and strong scientific research ability, and has formed the academic characteristics of "scientific and artistic combination, coordinated development of production, study and research". The discipline is based on the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing of Automobile Body, China-Italy Industrial Design Center. A group of teaching and research laboratories have undertaken the National Science and Technology Support Program, the “863 Project”, the “973” Project, the National Natural Science Foundation Project, the International Cooperation and Exchange Project, and a large number of horizontal design projects. There are 6 Doctoral tutors, 10 professors and 10 associate professors in this discipline. It is a powerful and well-structured academic team.

Research directions
School system & credits
1.A four-year flexible academic system based on four years will be implemented; students who directly study for doctor and MBA-DBA students will have a minimum of 5 years of study (including the master's education stage) and a maximum of 8 years.
2.The tutor-responsible system is implemented, and the tutor is responsible for the business guidance and ideological and political education of graduate students. At the same time, encourage the formation of the steering group to offer collective guidance. For interdisciplinary or interdisciplinary training of doctoral students, a deputy tutor should be hired from relevant disciplines to assist in the guidance.
3.PhD students should be trained in a good academic environment, under the guidance of the instructor, to select relevant courses, to access literature, to participate in academic exchanges, to determine specific topics, to engage in independent scientific research, and to achieve creative results.
4.The cultivation of doctoral students is based on scientific research. Focus on strengthening the sense of innovation and innovation capability， and cultivate the ability to independently engage in scientific research.
5.The credit system is implemented with a total credit of 80 credits.
Curriculum
1. Course learning requirements
(1) The content of the Doctor of Design course is deepening and expanding on the basis of the postgraduate master's degree in design, emphasizing comprehensiveness, cutting-edge and cross-cutting.。
(2) Students who directly study for doctor and MBA-DBA students need to complete the course credits required by the master's program in the discipline, and then completing the course credits specified in the doctoral program.
(3) Complete all course study during the first semester.
2. Course system
During the degree of a doctoral degree, the total credits for the course are 8 credits. The curriculum framework is as follows:
(1) Degree Foundation Course (5 credits)
Including ideological and political theory courses and subject basic courses.
a. Ideological and political theory courses (2 credits)
《Chinese Marxism and Contemporary》 (2 credits) is a compulsory course for doctoral students.
b. Subject basics courses (3 credits)
The basic courses of the discipline include 《Design System Theory and Methodology》, 《Design Art History》 and 《Environmental Art Morphology》, all of which are 3 credits. Students should choose one according to the research direction.
(2) Subject direction class (3 credits)
The basic subjects of the subject include 《Design Knowledge and User Knowledge》, 《Design Strategy》 and 《Environmental Art Design》, all of which are 3 credits, and students can choose one.
(3) Remedial courses
For doctoral students who lack the foundation of this subject, it is generally necessary to finish two backbone courses of the master's degree of this subjects as a supplementary course under the guidance of the tutor, and add it into the training plan, but not counting credits.

Academic activities (2 credits)
Doctoral students should make academic reports at least twice in the scope of design disciplines during the work of the thesis. At least once during the entire thesis, they will read their own papers at national or international academic conferences. During the study period, they should generally listen to more than 5 academic reports.
Academic activities should write a summary report, indicating the time, place, speaker, academic report topic of the academic activities, briefing the content and clarifying their academic views or opinions on relevant issues, and requesting the relevant written materials to be signed and approved by the supervisor.

PhD student comprehensive examination

Design academic Ph.D. students' opening report must be completed more than 2 years before the defense. The opening report must be supported by a clear scientific research topic. The topic has certain theoretical and academic depth. The literature review reads no less than 50 articles, of which no less than 20 foreign documents.

In the middle of the dissertation work, the assessment team will be organized to conduct a comprehensive examination of the graduate students' comprehensive ability, the progress of the thesis work, and the work attitude and energy input. The passer is allowed to continue the work of the thesis. Those who fail to pass the mid-term examination of the dissertation cannot apply for a doctoral thesis defense.
In addition to confidential papers, the mid-term inspections should be conducted in public. The specific time is determined by each training unit, but the time for applying for a defense is generally not less than one year.
