The National Art Foundation is a public welfare fund established by the state to promote artistic creation, create and promote original quality products, cultivate artistic creation talents, and promote the healthy development of the national art industry. Funded by the National Arts Foundation and undertaken by Hunan University, the National Art Fund's 2017 Art Talents Training Project”Daxiangxi Minority Brocade Embroidery Craft Innovative Talents Training”aims to cultivate the contemporary Inheritance of the national intangible cultural heritage list “Dong Nationality brocade”and“cross-stitching”and innovative high-end young artistic talents,and promote the transformation of the contemporary application value of Dong Nationality brocade and cross-stitching from“heritage”to “resources”.

Hunan University is a key university for the construction of“211 Project”,“985 Project”and“National Double-First Class”.School of Design,Hunan University is one of the earliest established design colleges in China. It was named one of the 60 best design schools in the world by American Business Weekly.School of design,Hunan University has a complete talent training system from bachelor, master,doctor to postdoctoral and a national experimental teaching demonstration center. It is the director unit of the Industrial Design Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. School of design,Hunan University ranked 5th in Design A in the 4th National University Discipline Assessment in 2017.It is a veritable "Whampoa Military Academy" in the Chinese design community.

Teachers in the project team includes experts from School of Design,Hunan University, national handicraft inheritors, cultural and creative industry experts, and non-legacy protection and inheritance experts.Participants were recruited by the main body of the project to the whole country (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). Finally, 20 outstanding young artistic talents from different fields and different regions were selected to participate in the training. Among them, there were 10 students in the Dong Nationality brocade class and the cross-stitching class.The entire training cycle lasted more than two months (June 26-August 31), including one month of intensive training (June 28-July 27, because these two classes are basically simultaneous, the cumulative training time of these two classes reached nearly 60 days), including one month of non-concentrated lecture creation practice (July 28-August 25). The design innovation practice of the Dong Nationality brocade class and the cross-stitching class was mainly separately guided by Professor Ji Tie and Mr. Wang Baosheng.More than 20 series of works created in this projec are being exhibited in the exhibition hall of School of Design ,Hunan University. The exhibition will be held from August 26th to August 31st.

At 9:30 am on August 26, the opening ceremony of the project results exhibition was officially held.Ni Wenhua, Director of Art Department of Hunan Provincial Department of Culture, Xie Chi, Vice President of Hunan University, Hou Junjun, Director of Social Science Department of Hunan University, He Renke, Dean of School of Design, Hunan University, Liu Yutang, Party Secretary of Hunan University School of Design , Liu Qihou,Honorary Chairman of Hunan Folklore Photography Association, Wang Weiyi, senior craft artist, Feng Xuemei, national inheritor of cross-stitching skills, Zhang Duoduo, Wang Baosheng, teacher of Hunan University School of Design,some representatives of students and teachers from fraternal college visited the exhibition hall of School of Design,Hunan University to attend the opening ceremony and held a seminar on the theme of”Traditional Process Innovation and Revitalization”.
During the seminar, the project leader,professor He Renke, showed the project implementation overview to leaders and experts and gave an in-depth interpretation of the students' innovative works, affirming the important role of the National Art Foundation in supporting contemporary handicraft heritage innovation.Director Ni Wenhua believes that Hunan is a national gathering place and a major cultural province with rich ethnic resources. However, we usually only pay attention to economic development and have not explored cultural resources.This requires a platform like School of Design to carry forward traditional skills through cultural innovation.This exhibition of works based on the traditional techniques of Dong Nationality brocade and cross-stitching shows us the possibility of cultural innovations, and also makes cultural communication more room for development.Vice President Xie Chi gave affirmation and encouragement to the exhibition of this work.As a national intangible cultural heritage, it is necessary to give Dong Nationality brocade and cross-stitching a modern concept, promote the traditional culture of the nation, and promote the cultural heritage of Hunan to the whole world. He hope that more cultural innovations can be presented in the future.
The creative achievements explored the contemporary design innovation based on the in-depth exploration of Dong Nationality brocade , cross-stitching and the essence of regional culture. The products are divided into four categories: art installations, household items, clothing, accessories, etc. These works are diverse in form and cover various types of practical and artistic decoration.They explored the contemporary marketization and innovatively spread of handicrafts.
（1）Art installation
In a specific time and space environment, these works deconstruct, extract, reconstruct, translate, and combine the material and non-material cultural elements related to Dong Nationality brocade and cross-stitching, and let them show a brand new art form.These works provide a reference for the dissemination of traditional craft culture and reshaping contemporary cultural forms.

Ms. Meng Yu from Shenyang Aerospace University created the "New Birth" series. Series 1 is the art of looms, which is the result of the cooperation of non-legacy,modern technology and artistic expression.They have a strong sense of substitution，and reflects the national intangible cultural heritage, Dong Nationality brocade's reborn in the creation of modern art.Series 2 uses 3D laser printing technology for the architectural model of the Drum Tower. Its “core” is the product of the high-end technology in the forefront of technology.It’s also the scientific and technological content built into Dong culture,and be prepared for the“new birth”.
The work of Zeng Qiaoling, a graduate student of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, embroidered nearly 600 pieces of embroidery with the technique of cross-stitching.It break through the exhibition form of traditional fiber art through the combination of digital media and fiber art.It also expresses all the complex and tangled thoughts of people to those who be missed and cared by giving the audience a all-round experience through sound, sight and touch.
In addition, there are also works of art such as "TIGER-X", "Road", "Xianglong Xianrui", "YaoTiaoZhiMa", "Line and Present", which give the traditional craftsmanship a new vitality from different angles and promote the charm and style of brocade embroidery better.
（2）Household items
This type of works mainly involve household items such as lamps and baby care products that students designed them by extracting related cultural elements such as Dong Nationality brocade and cross-stitching.
"Duo Ye Lamp" was produced by Xu Le, a teaching assistant of Zhijiang College of Zhejiang University of Technology. The design of "Duo Ye Lamp" uses the unique cultural symbols of Dong nationality, such as "Duo Ye Veins", "Swallow Nest" and "Bonfire". The structure of the bracket is extracted from Dong building structure, and the lampshade adopts 3D printing, reflecting the combination of tradition and modernity.
The work of Wang Shu, a teacher of Hunan Institute of Science and Technology,“Tiao Hua-Childcare Sling“，is a design work with the potential of market transformation to meet the needs of the contemporary market. The main body pattern is made of cross-stitching, and the pattern of fish body faucet implies the beautiful meaning of "Squid Jumping Dragon Gate".
（3） Clothing
This kind of work is mainly based on the essence of Dong nationality brocade and cross-stitching process. It digs into the cultural elements of Dong and HuaYao nationality, and combines it with other kinds of handicrafts to create clothing for special occasions such as concept fashion and children's 100-day gifts.
Hunan Women's College Qin Zhen's "Dong people's costume - LuSheng clothing", its design philosophy is that Dong people are a nation without words,the continuation of traditional clothing mainly depends on word of mouth.In the process of inheritance, the style of westernization appeared, the tendency of decoration modernization weakened the national charm of original clothing.This work focuses on the restoration design of the traditional Dong costumes.
Xiangtan University graduate student Yang Xi's work "BaiZuiXi", the whole set of works including hats, clothes, shoes, etc., is a child's 100-day gift box set.BaiZui refers to a kind of ritual that the child was born for 100 days. It hoped that child would grow up safely and live forever. This set of works is a good wish for child's growth.
In addition, it includes works such as "Flowers Are More Than Flowers" and "Symbol of Clothing in Xiang". These designs are designed in the form of clothing to make viewers feel the uniqueness of Dong nationality brocade and cross-stitching.
（4）Accessories
On the basis of extracting the cultural elements of Dong and HuaYao cultures, this kind of works mainly designed earrings accessories, small decorations, bag scarves and other accessories by using Dong nationality brocade and cross-stitching crafts.
Nanjing Xiaozhuang College teacher Zhang Zhiyan's work "Between Water And Clouds", the design concept comes from the double-sided embroidery in Xiang embroidery.Its craft material combines HuaYao cross-stitching with traditional Chinese ceramics, lacquer painting and batik, etc.It is designed with the theme of natural scenery of Huayao's water, clouds and terraced field,and cross-stitching. After a series of experiments, ceramics mainly use accessory as the main form of presentation, and lacquer paintings are mainly presented in the form of screen ornaments.
"Found Brocade" series - "Found Brocade,Have Fun", "Found Brocade,Past", "Found Brocade,Joy", are the works of Liang Yun,a teacher of Guangxi Normal University, which mean looking for good Dong nationality brocade.This set of works is divided into three series, which are used to convey the life of Dong women.
In addition, it includes works such as "Integration", "Dong Nationality Brocade Cloth Lifestyle Accessories Design", "Clean", "Dong Nationality Brocade Decoration Bag" and so on.
The exhibition attracted major media, design art professionals, art lovers and ordinary citizens from inside and outside the province to visit, which caused a warm response.We also hope that through the exhibition of innovative achievements of the National Art Fund training project, we will attract everyone's attention to the excellent traditional handicraft culture, arouse the cultural innovation enthusiasm of all walks of life, and make our own contribution to the inheritance and innovation of traditional handicrafts in the contemporary.
